How to be involved in the Scarecrow Festival:

What: Community event - construct a scarecrow to display at the Scarecrow Festival. This year's theme is "Garden Critters!!!"

Aim: for children and adults of all ages to have fun, to learn, to be creative, and to enjoy community involvement through constructing a scarecrow.

How to participate: form a school/daycare/family/community or other team, and build a scarecrow to bring to the Garden to show during Festival Week!

When: Festival Week is the week of 11-17 September.

Where: Erindale Neighbourhood Garden, Comrie Street Wanniassa (opposite Erindale Centre). Teams and supporters (teachers, carers, family, friends) can come to the Garden at any time in Festival Week to set up their scarecrows.

Who can participate: we welcome participation from any interested groups, such as: day care and family day care, preschools, schools, families; community or other groups, aged care residents. Any school or organisation can enter as many teams as they wish.

What to do: design and construct a scarecrow, or a group of scarecrows. Your scarecrows can be:

  • made from any materials (eg recycled materials, sticks, straw, fabric, car tyres, old brooms, metal, plastic, cardboard, paper).

  • any size (but of course, need to be able to be transported easily).

  • as imaginative as you like. This year our theme is GARDEN CRITTERS. The scarecrows might represent any type of insect or garden ‘critter’ or colony eg spiders, ants, bees, worms; a story or song about such critters (eg a nursery rhyme), a concept (eg an insect’s life cycle).

At the Scarecrow Parade on Friday 15 September at 10.00am, there will be an informal judging of entries, and certificates will be awarded to teams for:

  • Most original scarecrow/theme/idea/concept

  • Use of recycled materials

  • Best in team category

  • Best in Scarecrow Festival for 2023

How to enter: Simple! Send an email to our Garden Co-ordinator using our Contact form on this website. There is no entry fee. On your contact form, please indicate whether your team category is: day care/preschool; family/friends; aged care; community; or other.
